Portrait of Gydo Keijzer, composer for film, documentary and podcast

Gydo Keijzer (Groningen, 1993) is a composer, drummer and audio maker. Rhythm is his starting point. From there he builds productions that are allowed a bit of grit, as long as they hold your attention.

Gydo started drumming at the age of eight, which laid the foundation for his rhythmic approach. Not long after, he widened that focus to electronic music, drawn in by the layered textures of genres like IDM, ambient and techno. His current compositions bring those two worlds together: the organic, physical and earthy side of drumming with the cinematic, atmospheric character of analogue synthesizers. His influences include Aphex Twin, Lorn, Boards of Canada, Thomas Newman, Phil Collins and Sting.

Gydo studied at the Utrecht Conservatory (HKU), where he completed the Musician 3.0 programme. He graduated with the conceptual performance ‘Systeem 1 en Systeem 2’, an inquiry into the boundary between intuitive and rational action. The piece involved physical exhaustion, improvising over live radio signals and amplifying the musicians’ own heartbeats in real time. In 2015/2016 it earned him a place in the KNAW Honours Programme for Young Artists and Scientists.

Gydo works as an independent maker in music and tech. He writes and produces music and sound design for film, documentary and podcasts: audio that supports the story and sets the right tone. He composed the music for the podcast De Ware Jacob, which won the international INMA Award for Best Use of Audio.

Musical signature

Keijzer combines the organic, physical quality of acoustic drumming with the cinematic, atmospheric character of analogue synthesizers.

His work is marked by rhythmic textures, polyrhythms, tension built from few notes and plenty of space, and sound design that merges with picture and story.

For the podcast Nationaal Zwerfgoed he built the entire soundtrack from percussion instruments made of litter.

Services

As an independent composer and music producer I work for clients in the Netherlands and abroad. These are the services you can hire me for.

  • Music for podcasts: A theme tune decides within five seconds how serious your podcast sounds. I write original music for podcast series, so no stock track that also sits under ten other shows.
  • Music for film and documentary: Music for picture has to steer without pushing. I compose original soundtracks for documentaries, films and short-form productions: music that carries the story instead of sitting on top of it.
  • Sound design and audio branding: A brand sounds like something, whether you design it or not. I create sound logos, sonic identities and sound design for brands, series and media productions.
